Gerber handoff guide
How to check Gerber layer names and X2 roles
Layer names are conventions, not universal proof. X2 metadata provides stronger intent when present, while legacy exports often require visible inference and manual confirmation.
Read FileFunction first
Gerber X2 FileFunction attributes can identify copper position, solder mask, legend and profile roles. Preserve that source as high-confidence evidence.
Use extensions as a fallback
Common extensions such as GTL, GBL, GTS, GBS and GKO are useful, but exporters differ. Show that the assignment came from an extension rather than metadata.
Treat filenames conservatively
Names like top-copper or edge-cuts can help with legacy sets. Keep filename-only inference low confidence until a person confirms the role.
Detect duplicate intent
Two files assigned to the same required role may be valid revisions or an accidental duplicate. Resolve the ambiguity before building the reviewed ZIP.
